Leo

A small part of the world’s population is left-handed and I’m one of them.
As a left-handed person, I often notice how much of our daily lives are designed with right-handed people in mind. What seems simple or “normal” to most can actually be quite challenging for someone who’s left-handed.

That’s why I chose to focus my final project at art school on the theme of left-handedness. The result is a picture book about a left-handed polar bear named Leo short for Lefty and (Un)handy.

As you’ll notice, the book has an unusual layout. It’s designed to be read from right to left, giving readers a sense of how disorienting and unintuitive the world can feel when it isn’t built for you. I wanted to let people experience, in a playful way, what it's like to navigate a right-handed society as a left-handed person.

In addition to the special reading direction, the book also includes interactive challenges. Readers get to help Leo with everyday tasks that are trickier for left-handed individuals, like cutting with scissors, writing in mirror script with a fountain pen, and learning how to tie shoelaces.
